We're about to discover just how far away internet piracy of sport is when the England football team play a dead rubber against the Ukraine - a game which currently has no TV broadcaster attached after the collapse of Setanta and the real possibility that it could be broadcast live online only.

Somehow I have a feeling it's not going to be the same as watching on your nice big TV or down the pub with a few mates and this will impact on people's desire to pirate the games through a potentially poor feed or a connection that is prone to hanging. You're not going to wait until the game is finished to download either to avoid glitches in connection as your pipe struggles with an HD feed; sport is a live experience. Imagine every time you want to watch a sporting event, having to download it and continually being in your own version of Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads? - torturing yourself over avoiding any news about the game.

And, of course, turning to the world of media research, the numbers of online video views for a single event are damn hard to prove via an independent source - we'll likely just get a press release from whoever carries it claiming great success via their internal numbers, with little verification of data.

When this happens, as Chuck D and Flavour Flav once said, "Don't Believe The Hype"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2729976247208107533.post-69220048346471989352009-07-30T09:28:53.700-07:002009-07-30T09:28:53.700-07:00I guess the only upside of two suppliers is that t...I guess the only upside of two suppliers is that they compete on price and quality. If there is going to be a winner they do need to be regulated by a JIC of some sort.Siginthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16758215715112833781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2729976247208107533.post-80362409125954823732009-07-30T06:33:27.991-07:002009-07-30T06:33:27.991-07:00This issue is further muddied by Nielsen potential...This issue is further muddied by Nielsen potentially picking up the contract to run UKOM (JICIMS as was). If that initiative succeeds and the media industry gets behind it, Comscore are looking down the barrel of a lot of subscribers jumping ship to take UKOM - after all, why does a buyer of research need two currencies for one medium, especially if one is endorsed by the IPA and ISBA as UKOM is puportedly going to be?

This might well be the start of Comscore getting aggressive about Nielsen's position in the market. Indeed, I'd expect a fairly bitter (by media research standards) war of words over the short to medium term.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2729976247208107533.post-46564569545481882712009-07-14T03:09:37.201-07:002009-07-14T03:09:37.201-07:00Can they get him to do a piece on bankers ?Can they get him to do a piece on bankers ?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2729976247208107533.post-27643761503188521882009-07-10T10:37:11.700-07:002009-07-10T10:37:11.700-07:00Hi Rich (?)

They fall into the buzz RESEARCH agency category. They can talk about volume of buzz (derived via computers), but also conduct some deep dive analysis around specifics people are talking about online, including sentiment (best done via human analysis). I would class some companies in this space as buzz monitoring companies (rather than research). They might be more likely to produce sh*t charts like the one above that they think are impressive, but mean sod all.

You should talk to Alan Ault at WaveMetrix. Tell him I sent you.

Cheers
JonJon Beaumonthttp://www.virtualsurveys.comnoreply@blogger.com
